End Citizens United:Helping Change the Political Landscape

There have been a number of Supreme Court cases throughout history that have had a major and lasting impact on our nation. Some of those court cases include Dred Scott v. Sanford, the 1857 case stated that slaves were not to be considered United States citizens; another critical case that influenced United States history was Brown v. Board of Education which said the segregation could no longer exist in public schools. There have been many other cases that have had an influence on society; however, the 2010 case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, is a modern example of how Supreme Court cases can have a lasting impact on both the political landscape and society as a whole.

Citizens United, a conservative group, wanted to air a negative film against presidential candidate Hilary Clinton. However, the Federal Election Committee (FEC) determined that the film was, essentially, a campaign tactic and therefore, couldn’t be aired in the manner Citizens United had hoped. In order to have this decision overturned, United Citizens sued; however, the Supreme court ruled in favor of the FEC. A short two years later, the Supreme Court overturned the case saying that it was against the First Amendment. Now, the government has little voice in what a corporation can or cannot do to encourage an election one way or the other.

In response the ruling a group was formed called End Citizens United. The organization’s efforts are to end this ruling. Funds are raised in an effort to offset the mass amount of corporate money that was unleased with the Citizens United ruling. The ultimate goal of End Citizens United is for the Constitution to be amended to include a clear definition that freedom of speech applies to individual members of society, not corporations.

End Citizens United has a solid strategy to help them meet their goals. First, they lend their support to political candidates who are in support of fixing the current campaign finance laws. Second, they work diligently to have the Citizens United case overturned. Third, End Citizens United uses grassroot fundraising to aid in their efforts to reduce that which is being used by corporate donors. In order for these efforts to be successful, their current goal is to raise $35 million to use during the 2018 elections.
